Dragon Ball
Oshimeter
Synopsis
Deep in a remote mountain range, a boy with a monkey tail and superhuman strength lives alone, completely unaware that the rest of the world exists. That's Goku, and his life gets flipped when a girl named Bulma drives up in a capsule car looking for magical orbs called Dragon Balls — seven of them summon a wish-granting dragon, and Goku just happens to own one. He doesn't care about wishes, but he's never left the woods before, so he tags along. What follows is a 153-episode journey through a world where dinosaurs coexist with motorcycles, martial arts tournaments decide who's the strongest on earth, and a pig man tries to scam everyone he meets. The tone is genuinely funny in a way that a lot of shounen just isn't — Akira Toriyama's sense of humor keeps things loose even when the fights get serious. And the fights do get serious, building from goofy kid scraps to full-blown martial arts arcs with real stakes. Shunsuke Kikuchi's soundtrack gives everything this nostalgic energy that just sticks with you. If you grew up on Naruto, One Piece, or Fairy Tail, this is the show that built the template they all followed. It's the original adventure shounen, and it holds up better than you'd expect from 1986. Watching Goku grow from a clueless kid in the wilderness into a genuine fighter is one of the most satisfying character arcs in the genre.
