Dragon Ball Z: Bardock, The Father of Goku
Oshimeter
Synopsis
A low-class Saiyan soldier, Bardock spends his days doing exactly what Saiyans do — destroying planets on Frieza's orders, no questions asked. Then a dying alien on one of those planets curses him with something far worse than death: the ability to see the future. And what he sees is everything ending. His people, his planet, all of it wiped out by the very tyrant they serve. This is a TV special that takes maybe 50 minutes of your time and reframes the entire Dragon Ball Z story from the ground up. If you've ever watched DBZ and wondered where Goku actually came from, this fills in that gap in a way that hits harder than you'd expect from a single episode. The tone is darker and more grounded than the main series — less tournament arcs and screaming power-ups, more one soldier piecing together a truth nobody wants to hear. If you liked the gritty underdog energy of Saint Seiya or the backstory-heavy emotional beats in Katekyo Hitman Reborn, there's something here for you. It also works as a standalone watch even if you're not deep into Dragon Ball lore. Bardock is not a hero in the traditional sense — he's rough, brutal, and morally complicated — which makes watching him confront something completely beyond his control genuinely interesting. It's a short watch with a lot more weight than its runtime suggests.
