Pokémon: Origins
Oshimeter
Synopsis
Picking your starter in Pokémon Red or Blue for the first time, heading out into the Kanto region with zero idea what was coming — that feeling of pure discovery is something most players never forget. This 4-episode TV special from 2013 is basically that experience animated. Red picks Charmander from Professor Oak, gets handed a Pokédex, and sets off to catalog all 151 Pokémon while his rival Blue is already one step ahead. It's a straightforward setup, but what makes Pokémon: Origins hit different is that it actually follows the games instead of Ash's never-ending journey through the main series. Red loses battles. Red struggles. The tone stays action-packed and occasionally comedic, but there's a weight to the fights that the long-running show rarely captures — particularly when Red goes up against Team Rocket and realizes this whole trainer thing isn't just about collecting badges. Production I.G, Xebec, and OLM split animation duties, and the result looks noticeably sharper than what you'd expect from a Pokémon project. At only four episodes, it covers a lot of ground fast, focusing on key moments rather than dragging things out. If you grew up with Digimon Adventure or Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters and remember that specific feeling of a kid thrown into something bigger than themselves, this channels the same energy but concentrated down to its essentials. It's pure Gen 1 nostalgia done with care, and it respects your time.
