Pokémon the Series: XYZ
Oshimeter
Synopsis
After decades of collecting gym badges across multiple regions, Ash Ketchum finally hit a turning point — the Kalos saga is where the Pokémon anime finally decided to grow up a little. In XYZ, Ash is one badge away from challenging the Kalos League when Bonnie finds a strange, unidentifiable Pokémon hiding in her bag. They call it Puni-chan, and it turns out a shadowy organization called Team Flare wants it badly. That mystery thread runs through the whole 47-episode TV series, giving it a tighter narrative than most Pokémon seasons, which tend to meander between gym battles and filler. The animation from OLM is genuinely impressive here — battle sequences have a fluidity and intensity that feels closer to a shonen action show than a kids' series. Mega Evolution adds real tactical weight to fights, and Ash's Greninja gets a transformation that became iconic for a reason. Serena's contest arc and the Team Flare storyline give the supporting cast actual things to do beyond cheering from the sidelines. If you grew up watching Digimon Adventure or Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters and assumed you'd aged out of this kind of show, XYZ might surprise you. It still has the comedic, lighthearted Pokémon DNA, but there's a cohesion and stakes to this season that reward sticking around. It's the version of Pokémon that long-time fans kept hoping the anime would become.
