Synopsis

After years of chasing them, Pilaf finally gets what he's been after — the Black Star Dragon Balls, ancient and more powerful versions of the ones you already know. The problem is Goku shows up at exactly the wrong moment, and Pilaf panics and wishes Goku back into a child's body. Classic Pilaf. Now Goku is stuck looking like a grade schooler, and the scattered Dragon Balls are locked to planets across the galaxy with a one-year countdown before Earth gets destroyed. So Goku packs up and heads to space, joined by his granddaughter Pan and a teenage Trunks, to track them all down before time runs out. The setup alone is genuinely fun — Goku being small and goofy again gives the early episodes a lighter, comedic energy that feels different from Z. Each planet they visit has its own weird flavor, which keeps things from getting stale if you're into that episodic adventure style. Think One Piece's island-hopping structure or the variety you get in Hunter x Hunter's early arcs. If you grew up with Dragon Ball and want to see familiar characters in stranger, more absurd situations than usual, GT scratches that itch. It's a 64-episode TV series from 1996 with Toei Animation's signature style, and it leans into the fun of the original Dragon Ball more than Z did — less tournament arcs, more wandering the universe and running into trouble.

Quick Takes

For a series that isn’t well revered by Dragon ball fans, this ending was a perfect send off. Amazing ost, and a great end for our beloved protagonist.
This was a legendary episode and it will forever have a place in my heart as Goku went Super Saiyan 4 for the first time. The soundtrack, the emotional build-up with Pan as Goku came to his senses and the design of the form all enticed the moment.
The best final chapter of the entire Dragon Ball franchise, it is emotional, nostalgic and features an extraordinarily well-executed art style, character design and soundtrack; a true love letter to Dragon Ball fans.
