LUPIN THE IIIRD THE MOVIE: The Immortal Bloodline
Oshimeter
Synopsis
As the world's greatest thief, Lupin III has been pulling heists across anime since the 1970s. You don't need to know any of that history to enjoy this movie. Here's the setup: Lupin and his crew—sharpshooter Jigen, swordsman Goemon, and the ever-scheming Fujiko Mine—fly out to an uncharted island in the Bermuda Triangle chasing a massive treasure. Their plane gets shot down before they even land, and they crash onto an island littered with decaying weapons and nuclear wreckage, ruled by a guy named Muom who claims he literally cannot die. Bullets don't work. Swords don't work. So Lupin has to out-think an immortal warlord using nothing but thief logic and sheer audacity. Director Takeshi Koike brings the same raw, stylized animation he's known for—sharp lines, exaggerated motion, fights that feel like they could jump off the screen. The tone bounces between genuine tension and the kind of dry humor the franchise does so well. It's a single movie, so there's no commitment beyond an hour and change. If you liked the freewheeling crew dynamics of Cowboy Bebop, the gritty action energy of Black Lagoon, or the stylish cool of Samurai Champloo, this hits a similar nerve. It's a heist thriller where the real puzzle isn't cracking a safe—it's figuring out how to beat someone who can't be killed.
