Synopsis

The world's greatest thief, Lupin III wants to make sure you know it too. Grandson of the legendary gentleman-thief Arsène Lupin, he travels the globe with a crew that has absolutely no business working together: a deadpan sharpshooter, a stoic samurai who occasionally cuts bullets in half, and a beautiful con artist who will absolutely betray him if the price is right. Their target is whatever priceless treasure happens to be most inconveniently guarded, and chasing them across every country is Inspector Zenigata, a man whose entire career and personality are dedicated to putting Lupin in handcuffs. He has not succeeded yet. This is a TV series from 1977 running 155 episodes, so the format is mostly self-contained heist adventures — you can jump in almost anywhere and follow along without homework. The tone sits somewhere between a classic caper film and a road-trip comedy, with a jazz soundtrack by Yuji Ohno that makes everything feel cooler than it probably should. If you enjoyed the globe-trotting mystery structure of Detective Conan but want something with more adult humor and zero obligation to follow a long case arc, Lupin fits well. Fans of Bakumatsu Gijinden Roman will recognize the DNA immediately. The animation is dated, obviously, but the character dynamics hold up — there is a specific kind of wit here that feels rare, where nobody is purely a hero, nobody is purely a villain, and everyone is mostly just trying to get paid.
