Lupin III: The Legend of the Gold of Babylon
Oshimeter
Synopsis
When ancient Babylonian tablets show up in Manhattan, they apparently point to a real Tower of Babel — built entirely out of gold. That's enough to get Lupin III and his crew on the next flight to New York. It's also enough to get two rival Mafia families, a Polish mob boss with a flyswatter obsession, and a mysterious old woman who drinks too much involved in the same chase. Oh, and Inspector Zenigata has assembled an all-female police unit specifically to finally catch Lupin, so that's happening too. The whole thing spirals into a trans-continental mess that's equal parts heist thriller and complete chaos. What makes this one stand out from other Lupin entries is the visual fingerprint — director Seijun Suzuki brings a surreal, avant-garde edge that gives the film a genuinely weird atmosphere you don't usually get from the series. Yuji Ohno's jazz soundtrack does a lot of heavy lifting too, keeping things loose and playful even when the stakes are high. If you've already watched Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro and want something with a stranger, more offbeat energy, this is the natural next step. Fans of City Hunter: The Secret Service will recognize the same 80s action-comedy DNA. It's a 1985 movie, so it's not a long commitment — just a fun, slightly unhinged adventure that trusts you to keep up with the absurdity.
