Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro
Oshimeter
Synopsis
A clean casino heist ends with Lupin III realizing the entire haul is fake. Not just fake — expertly counterfeited bills that are almost indistinguishable from the real thing. Instead of cutting his losses, Lupin does what Lupin does: he follows the money, straight into a tiny European nation called Cagliostro. Within minutes of arriving, he's already tangled up in a high-speed car chase involving a girl in a wedding dress running for her life. That sets the tone pretty well. The movie is a 1979 action-adventure directed by Hayao Miyazaki — yes, that Miyazaki, in his directorial debut — and it carries all the fingerprints you'd expect: fluid animation, a charming sense of humor, and chase sequences that still hold up. Lupin himself is a great protagonist. He's a thief, but the fun kind — clever, unpredictable, and surprisingly principled when it matters. His crew, including the stoic sharpshooter Jigen, rounds out the dynamic nicely. The whole thing moves fast, balancing comedic beats with genuine suspense without either undercutting the other. If you enjoyed Castle in the Sky for its adventure-with-heart feel, or Cowboy Bebop: The Movie for a stylish caper with a tight runtime, this fits that same space. It's a single movie, under two hours, and it doesn't waste a frame.
