Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro

A clean casino heist ends with Lupin III realizing the entire haul is fake. Not just fake — expertly counterfeited bills that are almost indistinguishable from the real thing. Instead of cutting his losses, Lupin does what Lupin does: he follows the money, straight into a tiny European nation called Cagliostro. Within minutes of arriving, he's already tangled up in a high-speed car chase involving a girl in a wedding dress running for her life. That sets the tone pretty well. The movie is a 1979 action-adventure directed by Hayao Miyazaki — yes, that Miyazaki, in his directorial debut — and it carries all the fingerprints you'd expect: fluid animation, a charming sense of humor, and chase sequences that still hold up.
