Lupin III: Napoleon's Dictionary
Oshimeter
Synopsis
Napoleon's dictionary is the prize dangling at the finish line of a classic car race from Madrid to Paris, and that's all Lupin III needs to hear — because that dictionary holds the key to a hidden imperial treasure. Of course, roughly every spy agency on the planet figured out the same thing, so what starts as a road race turns into a rolling international incident with Lupin right in the middle of it. His crew is along for the ride: Jigen with a gun, Goemon with a sword, and Fujiko doing whatever Fujiko decides is best for Fujiko. Inspector Zenigata is also in pursuit, because he always is. The whole thing moves fast, keeps its tongue firmly in cheek, and never takes itself too seriously. This is a TV special from 1991, so it is a self-contained story — one sitting, no commitment required. The jazz-influenced soundtrack gives it that cool, slightly sleazy charm the Lupin franchise is known for. If you have watched City Hunter or Cat's Eye and want something with that same adult-cast, 90s action-comedy energy, this fits right in. Fans of Cowboy Bebop who appreciate slick criminals with style over substance would also find familiar ground here. It is not trying to reinvent anything — it is just a well-constructed caper with good pacing and a roster of characters who have been doing this long enough to make it look effortless.
