Lupin III: Tokyo Crisis
Oshimeter
Synopsis
The world's most wanted thief has stolen a lot of things, but this time the score involves two ancient photographic plates that supposedly point to a buried Edo-period treasure — and they're sitting in the collection of a flashy millionaire who's about to open a theme park in Tokyo. Classic Lupin setup, except nothing goes smoothly. Jigen can barely shoot straight because of a brutal toothache. Goemon's legendary sword has been swiped and put on display like a museum piece. Inspector Zenigata is on the hunt as always, but he's got a journalist named Maria tagging along, and she has some kind of murky connection to the guy they're trying to rob. The plates themselves turn out to be hiding something way more complicated than anyone bargained for. It's a one-episode TV special from 1998, so it moves fast and keeps the tone light without being weightless — mysterious enough to stay interesting, comedic enough that the whole thing feels like hanging out with old friends. If you've seen the Detective Conan movies or grew up with City Hunter, this hits a similar sweet spot: slick retro action with actual personality behind the characters. Even if you're not deep into the Lupin franchise, Tokyo Crisis works as a standalone entry. It's a compact, well-paced heist story with a historical mystery underneath it.
