Lupin III: Dead or Alive
Oshimeter
Synopsis
The world's greatest thief has set his sights on a legendary treasure hidden on a mysterious floating island called the Drifting Island, and that thief is Lupin III. He brings along his sharpshooter buddy Jigen and the stone-cold samurai Goemon, and the three of them roll in like they own the place — until the island's security system, something called the Nanomachine, makes it very clear they do not. That's the setup, and it only gets weirder from there. The island is connected to a small kingdom called Zufu, now under the thumb of a knife-obsessed military general who took power through a coup, and Lupin being Lupin, he's going to poke at all of it. This is a 1996 movie directed by Monkey Punch, the original manga creator, so it has his specific fingerprints all over the tone — equal parts slick heist energy and goofy comedy, with some genuine political intrigue underneath. It also quietly blends traditional animation with early CG, which holds up better than you'd expect. If you've watched Cowboy Bebop and liked the cool-guys-with-guns aesthetic, or if City Hunter's blend of action and humor ever clicked for you, classic Lupin is very much in that lane. It's a breezy 100 minutes, nothing too heavy, and a solid entry point into the franchise if you've never touched it.
