Yu Yu Hakusho: Ghost Files
Oshimeter
Synopsis
Meet Yuusuke Urameshi: a 14-year-old punk who skips school, picks fights, and has zero prospects — then he dies saving a kid from a car. The twist? The spirit realm didn't expect him to do anything selfless, so they literally don't have a slot for him. He gets offered a deal: complete some tasks, earn your life back, and become a Spirit Detective working cases between the human and demon worlds. What starts as a delinquent-with-a-heart-of-gold setup gradually builds into something way more layered than you'd expect from a 112-episode TV series from 1992. The power system revolves around Spirit Energy and keeps evolving in ways that actually matter to the fights rather than just being number inflation. The tournament arcs — especially the Dark Tournament — are some of the best in shounen, period. And the core cast of Yuusuke, Kuwabara, Hiei, and Kurama have this chemistry where they genuinely grow on you over time; they're not just archetypes filling roles. The tone shifts from lighter supernatural detective stories to legitimately intense martial arts conflicts without it feeling forced. If you liked Hunter x Hunter, this is literally the same creator's earlier work, and you can feel the DNA. Fans of Bleach or Dragon Ball Z will find a lot to love here too, but Yu Yu Hakusho tends to be tighter with less filler. It's one of those foundational shounen that still holds up.
