In Kamome Academy, a high school girl summons the rumored spirit Hanako-san, only to discover that the wish-granting entity is a mischievous boy.

📖 SYNOPSIS

A love-struck first-year at Kamome Academy, Nene Yashiro decides to summon the school's Seventh Mystery — a bathroom ghost named Hanako-san who supposedly grants wishes. Small problem: Hanako-san isn't the girl from the legend. He's a boy. A cheeky, hat-wearing ghost boy with a lot more going on behind that grin than he lets on. After a supernatural mishap in the first episode, Nene ends up bound to Hanako as his assistant, and the two start dealing with the other six Mysteries of the school — spirits that range from mischievous to genuinely threatening.

The thing that sets this 12-episode TV series apart is the art. Lerche went hard on the visual design here — it looks like a manga come to life with these rich, almost storybook-quality colors and bold linework that give everything a slightly surreal feel. It fits perfectly, because the show constantly shifts between goofy comedy, creepy supernatural tension, and surprisingly tender character moments without any of those tones feeling forced.

If you liked Noragami's dynamic between a human and a god with a mysterious past, or the gentle spirit-of-the-week structure of Natsume's Book of Friends, this hits a similar sweet spot. There's also some Morose Mononokean energy in the school setting and yokai politics. Don't let the colorful aesthetic trick you into thinking it stays lighthearted — there are layers here, and Hanako's backstory gets genuinely dark.
