Synopsis

What kind of story takes the very weapon meant to annihilate vampires and turns it into a tool to heal them instead? That's the contradiction at the heart of this one. Set in a gorgeous steampunk version of 19th-century Paris, The Case Study of Vanitas follows Noé Archiviste, a young vampire searching for the legendary Book of Vanitas, a grimoire said to bring ruin to all vampire-kind. Instead of some ancient evil, he finds Vanitas himself — a cocky, sharp-tongued human who claims to be a doctor specializing in curing vampires whose true names have been corrupted. The two form an uneasy alliance, and the dynamic between them carries the whole show. Vanitas is theatrical and secretive, Noé is earnest and curious, and watching them circle each other while solving supernatural cases in candlelit Parisian streets is genuinely compelling. Studio Bones brings their usual quality here — the fight choreography hits hard, and the atmosphere drips with this moody, elegant energy that fits the setting perfectly. The soundtrack alone pulls you into the world. It bounces between witty banter and moments that go surprisingly dark without warning, which keeps the tone from ever feeling stale. If you liked the aesthetic of Black Butler or the character dynamics in Bungou Stray Dogs, this occupies similar territory. Fans of Moriarty the Patriot will appreciate the historical European setting and layered mysteries. Twelve episodes for this first part, and it sets its hooks in deep.
