Black Butler
Oshimeter
Synopsis
Earl Ciel Phantomhive is only 12 years old, yet he runs the criminal underworld of Victorian London on behalf of the Queen, and his butler is a demon. That's the setup for Black Butler, and it only gets darker from there. Ciel Phantomhive lost everything — his parents, his home, his childhood — and in his lowest moment, he made a Faustian bargain with a devil named Sebastian Michaelis. Now Sebastian serves as his perfect butler, handling everything from afternoon tea to dispatching threats with terrifying elegance, all in exchange for something Ciel can never take back. The dynamic between these two is the real draw here. Ciel isn't some helpless kid waiting to be rescued — he's cold, calculating, and willing to get his hands dirty. Sebastian isn't a friendly protector — he's a predator playing the long game. Watching them navigate murder cases, underground crime rings, and supernatural threats across a gorgeously realized gothic London is genuinely compelling stuff. A-1 Pictures nails the atmosphere across all 24 episodes, leaning hard into the dark aesthetic without it feeling try-hard. If you liked D.Gray-man's blend of Victorian setting and supernatural action, or the morally grey partnerships in Darker than Black, this hits a similar nerve. Fans of Descendants of Darkness will also find familiar ground in the gothic mystery tone. Just don't expect a lighthearted ride — the show earns its darkness.
