Synopsis

At just 13 years old, Ciel Phantomhive has a demon for a butler, and somehow that's the least unsettling thing about his life. In this 13-episode TV series from CloverWorks, Queen Victoria sends Ciel and Sebastian to southern Germany to investigate a string of deaths tied to a place called the Werewolves' Forest. Every victim wandered in, came out with grotesque deformities, and died shortly after. The locals blame a witch's curse and leave it at that. Ciel, being Ciel, doesn't buy it. He drags his household staff into the forest, where they stumble onto an isolated village run entirely by women and led by a green-eyed girl called the Emerald Witch. The villagers don't want outsiders around, and the deeper Ciel's group digs, the more they start feeling the curse's effects themselves. It's a slow-burn mystery layered over gothic atmosphere — dark forests, folk horror vibes, and that constant tension between what's genuinely supernatural and what's human cruelty dressed up in superstition. If you liked the occult-drenched worlds of Hellsing or D.Gray-man, this sits in a similar space — Victorian-era aesthetics, morally grey characters, and stakes that feel personal rather than world-ending. The Ciel-Sebastian dynamic carries a lot of psychological weight here, more chess match than buddy comedy. The 2025 production values from CloverWorks give it a polished, moody look that fits the material well. Worth your time if you're into dark mysteries with actual atmosphere behind them.
