The Case Study of Vanitas Part 2
Oshimeter
Synopsis
Armed with a grimoire that can heal vampires — and cursed to boot — the human Vanitas is either the most useful or most dangerous person in a world where vampires and humans barely coexist. His partner Noé is a vampire who's supposed to be documenting all of this but keeps getting pulled into the chaos instead. In Part 2 of this 12-episode TV series, the two head to the town of Gévaudan to track down a monstrous wolf-like creature called the Beast, suspected to be a curse-bearing vampire. Things go sideways fast when they get separated and thrown back in time, right into the Beast's hunting grounds. Vanitas ends up working alongside Jeanne, a vampire hunter with ties to the creature, while Noé winds up in the care of Chloé d'Apchier, a reclusive vampire hiding secrets of her own. Studio Bones brings its usual polish to the action scenes, and the character dynamics here get genuinely layered — Vanitas and Noé's relationship keeps shifting in ways that feel earned rather than forced. The tone sits somewhere between gothic mystery and historical adventure, with enough intrigue to keep you guessing. If you liked the dark Victorian atmosphere of Black Butler or the supernatural puzzle-box storytelling of Pandora Hearts and D.Gray-man, this scratches a similar itch. The Gévaudan arc is where the show really finds its footing, letting its cast breathe while the mystery tightens around them.
