Parasyte: The Maxim
Oshimeter
Synopsis
A parasitic alien tries to burrow into average 16-year-old Shinichi Izumi's brain one night — but it fails, gets stuck in his right hand instead, and now he's sharing his body with a curious, coldly logical creature he names Migi. Meanwhile, the parasites that did reach their hosts' brains are out there wearing human faces and eating people. Shinichi and Migi have to figure out how to coexist — and how to survive, because other parasites see their weird arrangement as a problem that needs solving. What makes this 24-episode TV series hit so hard is watching Shinichi change. He starts out as a squeamish kid who can't handle conflict, and as the body count rises and the lines between human and monster blur, he becomes something harder to define. Migi, for its part, is genuinely fascinating — an alien intelligence that treats morality like a math problem. Their dynamic carries the whole show. Madhouse animated this back in 2014 and the action sequences are brutal and fluid, especially when parasites start shapeshifting mid-fight. The horror here isn't just gore — it's the slow erosion of what makes someone human. If you liked Tokyo Ghoul's identity crisis angle but wanted tighter writing, or if Ajin's premise grabbed you, Parasyte does that kind of story with real emotional weight. Based on a seinen manga from the late '80s, and it still feels uncomfortably relevant.
