The Devil Lady
Oshimeter
Synopsis
A supermodel career, fame, and a seemingly perfect life in modern-day Tokyo — Jun Fudo has it all, until she discovers she can transform into a monstrous being called Devil Lady. Turns out, humans are evolving into savage creatures known as devil beasts, and Jun carries those same genes. The difference is she can hold onto her mind when she transforms, which makes her useful to Lan Asuka, a cold government operative who recruits Jun to hunt down and destroy other devil beasts before they tear the city apart. Jun doesn't really get a choice in the matter. This is a 26-episode TV series from 1998, and it leans hard into its seinen roots. The tone is genuinely dark — not edgy for the sake of it, but heavy with psychological weight. Jun isn't some eager warrior. She's horrified by what she is, and every fight forces her to confront how thin the line between her and the monsters really is. The atmosphere is dread-soaked, with a haunting soundtrack that sits under your skin. If you liked Devilman Crybaby, this is essentially its spiritual predecessor — same DNA, different lens, more slow-burn. Fans of Parasyte -the maxim- will recognize the body horror and identity crisis elements, and there's a Claymore-like dynamic in the "weapon who might become the enemy" setup. It's not flashy or fast-paced by modern standards, but it builds something genuinely unsettling if you let it.
