My Bride is a Mermaid
Oshimeter
Synopsis
Nagasumi Michishio nearly drowns during a summer vacation trip and gets rescued by a mermaid. Sweet, right? Except the mermaid is Sun Seto, daughter of an underwater yakuza family, and mermaid law says if a human sees their true form, someone has to die. The only loophole is marriage. So now this regular middle school kid is engaged to a mob boss's daughter, and her father Gōzaburō — a terrifying, hilariously overprotective merman gangster — wants nothing more than to see Nagasumi at the bottom of the ocean permanently. The whole 26-episode TV series is basically Nagasumi trying to survive daily assassination attempts from his future father-in-law while also navigating school life with Sun transferring in and a growing cast of unhinged characters orbiting around them. The yakuza parody stuff is where this show really shines — it takes organized crime tropes and runs them through the most absurd mermaid filter possible, and the comedic timing is genuinely sharp. The soundtrack leans hard into dramatic yakuza movie vibes at the most ridiculous moments, which sells the jokes even harder. If you liked the forced-relationship comedy of Nisekoi or the chaotic harem energy of To LOVE-Ru, this hits a similar sweet spot but with its own distinct flavor. It's also got some of that Ah My Goddess warmth buried underneath all the chaos. The romance between Nagasumi and Sun is actually pretty endearing once the dust settles between gags.
