Synopsis

Sent from oppressed space colonies to wage guerrilla war against a military superpower, five teenagers each arrive alone, each one piloting a near-indestructible mech called a Gundam. That's the setup for Mobile Suit Gundam Wing, a 49-episode TV series from Sunrise that aired in 1995 and still holds up as one of the more politically layered entries in the mecha genre. The five pilots — Heero, Duo, Trowa, Quatre, and Wufei — aren't a team at first. They don't even know each other. They just land on Earth separately and start causing chaos, which immediately complicates things when the shadowy organization pulling strings behind the Alliance starts responding. The tone is serious and a little cold, especially around Heero, who's the kind of character you spend the whole series trying to figure out. There's political scheming, shifting alliances, and a lot of moral grey area around whether what these kids are doing is actually right. The Gundam designs are distinct and iconic, and the soundtrack genuinely fits the drama. If you liked the moral complexity in Code Geass or the heavier political threads in Mobile Suit Gundam 00, this is worth going back to. Fans of Neon Genesis Evangelion who haven't touched this era of mecha might find the tone familiar. It's not lighthearted, and it doesn't pretend to be.
