Synopsis

On a quiet space colony, a kid named Amuro Ray spends his days tinkering with machines, but his world is shattered when a war he didn't ask for literally crashes through his front door. A Zeon military strike forces him into the cockpit of the Gundam, an experimental mobile suit the Earth Federation wasn't ready to deploy yet. Now he's stuck on a warship called the White Base with a crew of civilians and soldiers who barely trust each other, running from an enemy ace named Char Aznable who keeps showing up at the worst possible times. This is the 1979 TV series that basically invented the real robot genre. Before Gundam, giant robots were invincible super weapons piloted by heroes. Sunrise flipped that — here, mobile suits are military hardware, pilots are scared teenagers and tired soldiers, and nobody's clearly the good guy. The Principality of Zeon has genuine grievances against Earth, and the Federation isn't exactly noble. Across 43 episodes, the show digs into what war actually costs the people fighting it, wrapped in space opera politics and genuinely tense mecha combat. If you liked Neon Genesis Evangelion's reluctant pilot dynamic or the military drama of Macross, this is where those ideas started. It's also the foundation for everything in the Gundam franchise, including Gundam Wing. The animation is dated — no getting around that — but the storytelling holds up in ways that still feel honest. It's not flashy. It's just real in a way most mecha shows still haven't matched.

Despite the animation's shortcomings, the story in this episode was quite neat, which kept me focused on the screen to follow the dialogue and scenes that occurred. Although Gundam was briefly cornered, Amuro was able to overcome it as usual. I'm still looking forward to Amuro and Char's head-to-head again. It's sure to be an exciting fight when that time comes.

It turns out Kai also has the guts to become a military soldier. Meanwhile, I think the story in this episode is less exciting. Maybe Char's intention in launching an attack on White Base was to make it easier for his spy to enter White Base. Who knows what will happen if a spy also enters White Base. And what will Kai's attitude towards it?

In this episode, Gundam try its hand at fighting underwater. Amuro's combat skills are clearly improving. Meanwhile, White Base is once again safe from the Zeon invasion, but will Char be able to destroy White Base next? I can't wait to see Amuro and Char fight again.
