Synopsis

At only 14, Judau Ashta is already a junk dealer hustling to keep his little sister fed on a beat-up space colony. His big plan? Sneak onto a docked warship and steal a mobile suit to sell. What actually happens is Neo-Zeon shows up, things explode, and Judau ends up piloting the thing instead. Now he and his ragtag crew of colony kids are dragged into a full-scale war between the AEUG and Haman Karn's Neo-Zeon forces — none of them asked for this. This 47-episode TV series picks up right where Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam left off, but the vibe is genuinely different. The early stretch is surprisingly comedic and loose, almost like Gundam filtered through a Saturday morning adventure show. Judau's not a brooding soldier — he's a loudmouth street kid who fights because he has people to protect. Don't let that lighter tone mislead you, though. ZZ gradually pulls the rug out and gets into the same heavy, war-is-hell territory the franchise is known for. The shift hits harder because you've spent time laughing with these characters first. If you liked Zeta Gundam but found it relentlessly bleak, ZZ offers a different entry point into Universal Century — one that earns its darker moments by starting somewhere warmer. Fans of Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket's focus on civilians caught in conflict will find similar threads here, just on a bigger scale. It's rough around the edges early on, but it rewards patience.

Quick Takes

This show can be really tonally awkward and this comes from a time where Yoshiyuki Tomino hadn't really nailed down some of the finer aspects of writing specific types of people, however, this is one of the standout episodes of all of anime.
