Synopsis

Done waiting, Char Aznable is finally making his move. After years of conflict, political maneuvering, and uneasy truces, he's back with a plan so extreme it's almost hard to take seriously — until you realize he's completely serious about dropping an asteroid on Earth to force humanity into space. Standing in his way, as always, is Amuro Ray, who climbs into the Nu Gundam and goes out to stop him. What follows is the end of a rivalry that's been building since the original 1979 series. These two men have been enemies, reluctant allies, and enemies again for over a decade of in-universe time, and this movie is where it finally gets resolved. The emotional weight here is real — if you've watched through Zeta Gundam and gotten attached to either of these characters, Char's Counterattack hits differently than a standard mecha action film. It's not really about the robots. The suits are just the medium for two people who genuinely cannot stop defining themselves through each other. If you liked the political tension in Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam or the character-driven drama in Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn, this sits comfortably in that same space — serious, a little melancholy, and more interested in consequence than spectacle. It's a single movie, under two hours, and it functions as a proper conclusion rather than a cash-in. Worth watching if you've put in the time with the Universal Century timeline.

Quick Takes

The beginning feels like it just throws you into the middle of a movie. After watching Z Gundam this felt like a regression for Char. Quess and Hathaway were really annoying, and they took up most of the screen time. But this movie also has a really deep message. The animation and action were great, and the final scene was really emotional. Overall, this is a good movie despite its flaws, and it’s really important for later UC Gundam stories.
