Lupin III: The Secret of Twilight Gemini
Oshimeter
Synopsis
Stealing for the thrill of it is what drives Lupin III, and his latest thrill begins when a dying mob boss drops half a legendary diamond in his lap and calls it a key to buried treasure. The catch? The other half is somewhere in Morocco, and everyone from assassins to rival factions wants both pieces before Lupin can put them together. So he and his deadpan sharpshooter partner Jigen pack up and head to North Africa, where the political situation between local factions makes the whole treasure hunt considerably messier than expected. Fujiko Mine shows up too, naturally, because she always does, and she always has her own angle. This is a 1996 TV special — one self-contained story, roughly film length — so there's no commitment involved. The animation has that warm, slightly rough quality that late-90s production had before everything went digital, and the jazz-heavy soundtrack fits the whole globe-trotting caper energy perfectly. The tone is light but the plot has enough moving pieces to stay interesting. Think Cowboy Bebop's laid-back cool mixed with the puzzle-box plotting of Detective Conan, but filtered through a classic heist adventure. If you've seen City Hunter and liked the balance of action and humor with a cast of adults who actually feel competent, Lupin operates in similar territory. A good entry point if you're curious about the franchise without wanting to commit to a full series.
