Synopsis

At just 12 years old, Gon Freecss discovers his dad — the one who supposedly died — is actually alive and one of the world's most elite Hunters. So naturally, Gon decides to become a Hunter himself and track the guy down. The Hunter Exam alone is basically a death gauntlet where most people don't make it out in one piece, and that's just the first arc of 148 episodes. What makes this show stick is the group Gon falls in with: Killua, a kid raised by a family of assassins trying to figure out who he is outside of killing; Kurapika, last of his clan and driven by revenge; and Leorio, who just wants to be a doctor and is perpetually in over his head. Their dynamic carries the early arcs, but the show keeps evolving in ways you genuinely won't predict. There's a power system called Nen that's one of the most thought-out in any shounen — it rewards strategy over raw strength, which means fights have actual tension instead of just escalating power levels. If you liked Naruto or One Piece but wish there was less filler and more moral complexity, this is where you land. Fans of Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood will recognize the same willingness to go to dark places without losing heart. Madhouse animated it, so it looks great throughout. Don't let the bright colors and young protagonist set your expectations — this show earns its reputation the hard way.
