Synopsis

At just 12 years old, Gon Freecss finds out his deadbeat dad didn't just leave — he left to become one of the most legendary Hunters in the world. So naturally, Gon decides to take the Hunter Exam himself, a brutal gauntlet where most people wash out or die. Along the way he meets Killua, a kid his age who happens to come from a family of elite assassins; Kurapika, the last survivor of a massacred clan out for revenge; and Leorio, a loud guy who just wants to be a doctor. The friendships between these four are the real core of the show. This 1999 Nippon Animation TV series runs 62 episodes and covers the early arcs of Yoshihiro Togashi's manga, and what makes it stand out even now is how it treats its audience. The power system, called Nen, rewards strategy over brute force, so fights feel more like chess matches than screaming contests. Characters have actual moral complexity — nobody's cleanly good or evil. If you liked Naruto's found-family energy but wanted fewer filler episodes and more genuine tension, this hits that spot. Fans of One Piece's sense of adventure or Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood's willingness to go dark will find a lot to appreciate here. The art style looks dated, sure, but the writing holds up. It starts bright and adventurous, then gradually peels back layers you weren't expecting.
