Gintama on Theater 2D: Ikkoku Keisei-hen
Oshimeter
Synopsis
Meet Gintoki Sakata — a lazy, sugar-obsessed samurai living in an Edo Japan that got colonized by aliens. He runs a freelance odd-jobs business with a straight-man glasses kid and a super-strong alien girl, and somehow keeps stumbling into situations way above his pay grade. This movie compiles the Courtesan of the Nation Arc from Gintama's third season with some added footage, released as part of the franchise's 20th anniversary. The setup: Gintoki gets dragged to Yoshiwara's red-light district to meet a legendary courtesan, expecting some gorgeous beauty, only to find a stubborn old woman clinging to a decades-old promise with a lover she lost. What starts as a sentimental errand quickly spirals into political conspiracy involving the former Shogun, a castle on lockdown, and some very dangerous people who'd prefer certain secrets stay buried. That tonal whiplash is peak Gintama — you're laughing at toilet humor one minute, then genuinely tearing up the next, then watching a legitimately well-choreographed sword fight. If you liked the way Rurouni Kenshin balanced its historical setting with personal stakes, or how SKET Dance could pivot from absurd comedy to real emotional weight, this hits a similar nerve but cranked up in both directions. Bandai Namco Pictures keeps the animation sharp for the action scenes. Fair warning though — this is deep into Gintama's run, so you'll want the context of knowing these characters first. But if you're already a fan, this is a solid way to revisit one of the series' best arcs on the big screen.
