In an alternate Edo ruled by aliens, the Yorozuya team, led by the perpetually broke Gintoki, stumbles upon a powerful device that throws their world into chaos.

📖 SYNOPSIS

Running an odd-jobs business in an Edo colonized by aliens, the lazy, sugar-obsessed ex-samurai Gintoki Sakata can barely pay rent, his two employees — the straight-man Shinpachi and the absurdly strong alien girl Kagura — still haven't been paid, and most of the money probably went to pachinko. That's the setup for Gintama°, the fourth season of a 51-episode TV series that somehow manages to be one of the funniest and most emotionally devastating things in anime, often in the same episode. This season in particular is where the show starts cashing in on years of buildup. Arcs like Shogun Assassination and Farewell Shinsengumi hit with genuine weight because you've spent hundreds of episodes with these characters doing dumb stuff, and now the stakes are real. The comedy is relentless — fourth-wall breaks, parody episodes, running gags that pay off seasons later — but the drama never feels cheap. If you liked the chaotic energy of SKET Dance or Beelzebub but wanted something with a sharper edge and more narrative ambition, this is the show. There are echoes of Rurouni Kenshin in its samurai-era setting and surprisingly intense sword fights, just wrapped in layers of absurdist humor. Produced by Bandai Namco Pictures and adapted from the manga, Gintama° is the point where the series stops being "that comedy with aliens" and becomes something you genuinely can't put down.

✨ MUST WATCH IF...

You loved Gintama's earlier seasons and want the Shogun Assassination and Farewell Shinsengumi arcs
You're here for wild tonal shifts—gag episodes one week, emotionally devastating story arcs the next
Bandai Namco Pictures' upgraded action animation during serious arcs is a real step up from Sunrise's run
You enjoy fourth-wall-breaking parody humor that riffs on Jump manga and Japanese pop culture constantly

❌ SKIP IF...

You haven't watched the prior 265+ episodes—this season assumes deep knowledge of every character
Heavy Japanese wordplay and cultural references without context will frustrate rather than entertain you
You prefer a focused narrative—51 episodes mixing standalone gags with multi-episode drama feels uneven
