After Gintoki's absence, a golden-haired doppelganger usurps his role, forcing him to reclaim his place while the Yorozuya revisit Yoshiwara, uncovering tragic pasts and enduring love.

📖 SYNOPSIS

Walking through his own front door, Gintoki Sakata finds he's been replaced. Not fired, not forgotten in the normal sense—literally erased from everyone's memory and swapped out by a golden-haired pretty boy named Kintoki who's running the Yorozuya like nothing happened. The guy's own friends don't recognize him. That's the kind of show Gintama is: it'll set up something completely absurd and then somehow make you feel things about it.

Gintama': Enchousen is a 13-episode TV series from 2012, continuing the long-running Gintama saga set in an Edo-period Japan overrun by aliens. Studio Sunrise handles production, and the animation holds up where it counts—particularly during the emotional arcs. After the Kintoki situation resolves, the Yorozuya head back to the red-light district of Yoshiwara to help an aging courtesan track down a lost love, which is where the show really leans into its dramatic side.

The thing about Gintama is that it earns those serious moments by spending so much time being genuinely funny. One minute Gintoki is breaking the fourth wall about being a shounen protagonist, the next you're watching a samurai fight that hits harder than it has any right to. If you liked Rurouni Kenshin's historical setting but want something less serious, or if Sket Dance and Beelzebub are your speed for comedy, this sits comfortably in that space. Just know you should watch prior Gintama seasons first—jumping in here cold would be rough.

✨ MUST WATCH IF...

You've watched all 252 prior episodes and want the Kintoki doppelganger arc resolved
The Courtesan of a Nation arc's fast pacing and emotional depth sound like your thing
You enjoy Gintama when it leans harder into drama and character backstories over gag humor
A tight 13-episode season with Sunrise's consistent animation quality appeals to you

❌ SKIP IF...

You're here for pure comedy—this season tilts more toward serious dramatic arcs
You haven't seen previous Gintama seasons—running gags and character context won't land
You preferred the comedic soul of earlier seasons and don't want that balance shifted
