Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods
Oshimeter
Synopsis
After sleeping for 39 years, the God of Destruction Beerus wakes up because he dreamed about fighting someone called a Super Saiyan God. That's his whole motivation — he just wants a good fight. And honestly, that's a pretty great setup for a Dragon Ball movie. Set after the Majin Buu saga, Earth is peaceful, Bulma's throwing a birthday party, and everyone's just vibing. Then Beerus and his angel attendant Whis show up looking for Goku, and things go sideways in the best way. What makes this movie work is the balance between genuine tension and classic Dragon Ball humor. Beerus is legitimately terrifying — he can destroy planets on a whim — but he's also weirdly polite and obsessed with food. Whis is effortlessly cool in a way that makes you want to see more of him. The Super Saiyan God transformation gets introduced here, which adds a whole new layer to the Saiyan power scale and actually ties in the other characters in a meaningful way instead of just letting Goku solo everything. Toei Animation put real effort into the fight choreography, blending hand-drawn style with digital work that holds up well. If you enjoyed the stakes in films like One Piece Film: Z or Naruto Shippuden: The Movie but wanted something with more personality, this is the one. It's also basically the launchpad for Dragon Ball Super, so it matters for the larger story too.
