Synopsis

Meet Shinichi Kudo, a teenage detective prodigy who's basically Japan's Sherlock Holmes — cocky, sharp, and annoyingly good at solving murders. Then one night at an amusement park, he stumbles onto something he shouldn't have, gets drugged by some shady guys in black coats, and wakes up in a kid's body. Now he's stuck pretending to be a seven-year-old named Conan Edogawa while secretly trying to track down the criminal organization that did this to him. This TV special is a retelling of how it all started, but with a 2016 facelift. If you've watched any Detective Conan before, you know the original first episode is from 1996 and looks it. This version, written by manga creator Gosho Aoyama himself, expands on the backstory, adds scenes that weren't in the original, and gives everything a modern polish courtesy of TMS Entertainment. The animation is genuinely sharp, and the updated soundtrack ties it all together nicely. The vibe is a mix of comedic and mysterious — Conan running circles around adults who don't take him seriously never stops being funny, but there's real tension underneath when the Black Organization shows up. If you liked the cat-and-mouse energy of Gosick or the playful detective antics of Magic Kaito 1412, this hits similar notes. It's one episode, self-contained, and honestly the cleanest entry point into Detective Conan that exists right now.
