Case Closed Movie 05: Countdown to Heaven
Oshimeter
Synopsis
Technically a genius high school detective trapped in a child's body, Conan Edogawa has a knack for turning every vacation he takes into a crime scene. This fifth movie is no exception. What starts as a casual visit to the grand opening of the Nishitamashi Twin Towers — a pair of gleaming new skyscrapers — quickly unravels when bodies start turning up and a mysterious vintage Porsche keeps appearing at the wrong place and the wrong time. Conan, the Detective Boys, Professor Agasa, Ran, Sonoko, and the lovably oblivious Kogoro Mouri are all caught inside when things go sideways in a very literal, very explosive way. The tension of being trapped in a skyscraper while a countdown ticks down gives this one a distinct vertical thriller energy that sets it apart from earlier entries. If you liked the first movie's Time-Bombed Skyscraper for its high-stakes setting, or the puzzle-box structure of The Fourteenth Target, this one sits comfortably in that same lane. The comedy lands well between the tense moments, and the dynamic between Conan and Haibara adds a layer of weight that fans of the longer series will appreciate. You do not need to be caught up on the TV series to follow the plot — it works as a standalone mystery — but if you already know these characters, there is an extra dimension to it.
