Burn Up!
Oshimeter
Synopsis
Stuck writing traffic tickets, three female cops accidentally stumble into a human trafficking operation run by a wealthy businessman with enough political connections to keep the rest of the force looking the other way. That's the setup for Burn Up!, a 1991 OVA from AIC that wastes no time getting to the fun part. Maki, Reimi, and Yuka are likable underdogs — clearly capable, clearly underestimated, and clearly not going to let bureaucratic cowardice stop them when things get personal. The tone is a mix of comedic banter and genuine action, with the humor landing naturally rather than feeling forced against the darker subject matter. It's a single episode, so it moves fast and doesn't overstay its welcome. If you've watched Dirty Pair or Gunsmith Cats and want something in that same neighborhood — competent women, guns, attitude, a futuristic city backdrop — this fits comfortably in that company. Bubblegum Crisis fans will also recognize the DNA here. It's not trying to reinvent anything; it knows exactly what it is and delivers on that without pretense. The battle armor and commandeered hardware in the back half feel earned rather than random, mostly because the first act actually bothers to make you care about the characters before things escalate. For a one-shot OVA from the early 90s, it holds up as a tight, enjoyable slice of the girls-with-guns genre.
