Arc the Lad
Oshimeter
Synopsis
As the sole survivor of a tribe of firecasters, Elk lost everything when the Romalia Empire burned his village to the ground. Now he works as a bounty hunter through the Hunter's Guild, taking odd jobs in a world where high-tech machinery sits right next to swords, beasts, and elemental magic. Early on, he crosses paths with Lieza, a beast tamer on the run from the same empire that destroyed everything he knew, and from there the two get pulled into something way bigger — a conspiracy involving engineered monsters called Chimeras that can disguise themselves as humans. The tone here is darker than you might expect from a late-90s game adaptation. There's genuine horror woven into the fantasy and sci-fi elements, and Elk's arc isn't just about revenge — it's about what happens after the rage starts to settle. The world-building across 26 episodes has that same lived-in quality you get from Fullmetal Alchemist, where technology and magic aren't separate systems but part of the same broken civilization. If you liked the wandering gunslinger energy of Trigun or the occult conspiracy threads in Chrono Crusade, this hits a similar frequency. Bee Train's animation holds up decently for 1999, and the soundtrack does a lot of heavy lifting during the emotional beats. It's not a flashy show, but it commits to its story and doesn't pull punches when things go south.
