The Prince of Tennis
Oshimeter
Synopsis
Already a proven champion on American courts at just twelve years old, tennis prodigy Ryouma Echizen has now been shipped back to Japan by his dad to attend Seishun Academy — a middle school with one of the strongest tennis teams in the country. He walks in as a cocky freshman, immediately rubs the upperclassmen the wrong way, and then proceeds to back up every bit of that attitude on the court. That's your first two episodes, and the show barely slows down from there across 178 episodes of matches, rivalries, and increasingly wild tennis techniques that stop pretending to be realistic somewhere around the halfway mark. The character roster is genuinely massive — each rival school gets its own squad of memorable players with distinct playstyles and personalities, so it never feels like you're just watching the same match over and over. The dynamic between Ryouma and his Seishun teammates is where the heart of the show lives, though. These guys push each other, clash with each other, and grow together in ways that feel earned even when the tennis itself gets absurd. If you liked Haikyuu!! for the team chemistry or Kuroko no Basket for the over-the-top moves, this is kind of the blueprint both of those drew from. It's a 2001 Trans Arts production based on the shounen manga, and the animation shows its age, but the storytelling and character work hold up. Think of it as the gateway drug for an entire generation of sports anime fans.
