Synopsis

Not many shows in the sports anime genre match Haikyuu when it comes to making you care about the other side of the net, and this 2-episode OVA takes that idea and runs with it. Riku vs. Kuu shifts the spotlight to Nekoma High School during the Tokyo Qualifiers, where four teams are clawing for three spots at nationals. Kenma Kozume, the quiet genius setter who'd rather be gaming, has to hold Nekoma together while captain Kuroo keeps the team's morale sharp and tall newcomer Lev Haiba keeps being... Lev. Their biggest obstacle isn't just Fukurodani or the sneaky Nohebi Academy — it's their own inconsistencies as a squad. The matches here carry real weight because you've seen these characters on the periphery of the main series, and now you get to sit inside their heads during the moments that matter most to them. Production I.G brings the same fluid animation you'd expect, with rallies that genuinely make you hold your breath. The tone lands somewhere between nervous energy and quiet resolve — less about flashy spikes and more about whether a team built on connection and defense can hold it together when everything's on the line. If you liked the rival-team depth in Kuroko's Basketball or the way Ace of Diamond fleshes out opponents into full characters, this scratches the same itch. It's essential viewing if you care about the Haikyuu world beyond Karasuno, and at two episodes, there's no reason not to watch it.

Quick Takes

While I am aware that this special is focused more on nekoma's road to nationals (the details was amazing) I personally wished they could've shown more running scene of itachiyama here instead of just kiyoomi's back figure since itachiyama is one of the top powerhouse in japan.
let's start with how kenma is brilliant. i personally think the episodes before this special didn't really highlight how much of a genius he actually is and how nekoma values his judgements closely. there's a lot of details shown here esp w/ the competitive match between those 2
