Ranma ½
Oshimeter
Synopsis
At just 16 years old, martial arts prodigy Ranma Saotome turns into a girl when splashed with cold water. Hot water turns him back. That's the premise, and the show wrings 161 episodes of comedy out of it without ever really getting old. After falling into a cursed spring in China, Ranma returns to Japan only to find out his dad arranged a marriage between him and Akane Tendo, a martial artist who openly hates boys. Naturally, they're forced to live under the same roof, attend the same school, and pretend everything is normal while Ranma is one rainstorm away from a very awkward explanation. What makes Ranma ½ work is the ever-growing cast of weirdos — rival martial artists, obsessive suitors, people with their own bizarre curses — all orbiting Ranma and Akane's relationship like chaotic satellites. Every episode throws a new absurd problem at them, and the solution usually involves a fight, a misunderstanding, or both. The romance is there, buried under layers of stubbornness and pride, which honestly makes the small moments between them land harder. If you liked the gender-bending humor in Cheeky Angel or Kashimashi: Girl Meets Girl but want something with more martial arts chaos, this is the one. It's a 1989 Studio Deen production, so the animation is very much of its era, but Rumiko Takahashi's character writing carries everything. Comedic, warm, and endlessly rewatchable.
