EPISODE CONTEXT
Coming off the aftermath of Akane's hair-cutting incident, which deepened the friction between Ranma and Ryoga while complicating Akane's feelings, this episode pushes the rivalry and romantic tension further into focus. As episode 10 of 161, it's firmly in the foundation-building phase, locking in the Ranma-Akane-Ryoga dynamic that will recur throughout the series. It also sets the stage for the expanding cast and escalating romantic chaos that defines Ranma ½'s long run.
