Overlord: The Sacred Kingdom
Oshimeter
Synopsis
For years, a massive wall has kept the peace in the Sacred Kingdom, which is exactly the kind of setup that means things are about to go very, very wrong. When the demon Jaldabaoth shows up leading an army of demihumans, the kingdom's defenses crumble almost immediately. Desperate and out of options, the Sacred Kingdom's leaders are forced to ask for help from the one person nobody should ever trust — Ainz Ooal Gown, the undead Sorcerer King who may or may not be orchestrating the whole crisis behind the scenes. This is Overlord at its most layered: a war movie where the "hero" coming to save the day might be the actual villain, and the real question isn't whether he'll win, but what his angle is. Madhouse brought this to theaters in 2024, adapting the Holy Kingdom arc from the light novels that fans have been waiting years to see animated. The action hits hard, the political scheming is thick, and watching Ainz play 4D chess while everyone around him misreads the situation is as satisfying as ever. If you enjoyed the morally gray power fantasy of Saga of Tanya the Evil or the strategic manipulation in Code Geass, this scratches a similar itch. You don't strictly need to have seen all of the Overlord TV series first, but it helps — the payoff is better when you already know what Ainz is really about. Dark fantasy with brains behind the spectacle.
