Synopsis
Launching her own clothing brand called Happy Berry is the one goal driving Mikako Kouda. She's 16, enrolled at Yazawa Art School, and absolutely driven — the kind of person who sketches designs in her head while everyone else is just trying to get through the day. Living next door and going to the same school is Tsutomu, her childhood friend and constant bickering partner. Everyone around them assumes they're basically already dating. They both insist that's ridiculous. You can probably guess where this is going, but the journey there is genuinely worth your time. Gokinjo Monogatari is a 50-episode shoujo TV series from 1995 that feels less like a romance and more like a coming-of-age story that happens to have romance in it. The art school setting is specific and textured — fashion, creativity, and the messy reality of chasing something you actually care about. It captures that period of life where friendship and ambition and feelings all start colliding in ways you're not ready for. The 90s aesthetic is all over this, from the character designs to the fashion, and it genuinely adds to the charm rather than dating it. If you liked Paradise Kiss or Nana and wanted to see an earlier story from the same creative world — this is literally the predecessor manga by Ai Yazawa. Honey and Clover fans who love art-school dynamics and emotionally messy characters will also find a lot to connect with here.
