Paradise Kiss

Synopsis
On the surface, Yukari Hayasaka looks like the picture of a model student — studies hard, follows the path her mom laid out, doesn't ask too many questions. Then a punk guy with piercings and a spiked choker grabs her off the street because he thinks she'd make a good fashion model. She ends up in the atelier of Paradise Kiss, a group of art school students designing clothes for their senior showcase, led by George Koizumi — who is exactly as magnetic and emotionally complicated as that name sounds. What starts as Yukari reluctantly agreeing to model for them turns into a slow unraveling of everything she thought she wanted out of life. This is a 12-episode TV series from Madhouse, adapted from Ai Yazawa's josei manga, and it leans hard into the fashion world without ever feeling like costume porn. The animation style is deliberately stylish, almost editorial, and the soundtrack mixes Franz Ferdinand with softer, moodier tracks that hit differently during the quieter scenes. The romance between Yukari and George isn't idealized — it's messy, uneven, and sometimes uncomfortable in ways that feel honest. If you liked Nana's approach to adult relationships and growing up, this is from the same mangaka and carries that same emotional weight. Fans of Honey and Clover or Princess Jellyfish will recognize the vibe: young creatives figuring out who they are while everything feels urgent and uncertain. It's short, it's beautiful, and it doesn't waste your time.
