Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway
Oshimeter
Synopsis
Born under the shadow of a legendary Federation officer, Hathaway Noa finds that heavy legacy all the more complicated by the fact that he's secretly leading a terrorist organization. Set in Universal Century 0105, the Earth Federation has become bloated and corrupt, squeezing both Earth and the space colonies while the planet itself decays. Hathaway, haunted by the ideals of Char Aznable and the wars he witnessed as a kid, takes up the alias 'Mafty Navue Erin' and starts assassinating Federation officials. Then on a routine flight, he crosses paths with Kenneth Sleg — a sharp Federation officer — and Gigi Andalucia, a mysterious woman who seems to see right through him. What follows is this tense, slow-burn cat-and-mouse dynamic where Hathaway's double life starts cracking at the edges. The whole movie carries this weight to it, like every conversation could unravel everything. Sunrise put together some genuinely stunning animation here — the mecha battles feel massive and grounded in a way that hits differently from most Gundam entries. Hiroyuki Sawano's soundtrack layers in perfectly without overdoing it. If you liked the political tension of Char's Counterattack or the mature storytelling in Gundam Unicorn, this is right in that lane but with a darker, more contemplative edge. You don't strictly need deep UC knowledge to follow it, but it rewards fans who have that context. It's a movie that sits with you afterward.
