Synopsis

Al is a 10-year-old kid who thinks war is the coolest thing ever. He collects mobile suit parts, gets excited when battles break out near his space colony, and treats the whole conflict between the Earth Federation and Zeon like it's a game. Then he actually meets a soldier. Bernie is a rookie Zeon pilot who crash-lands in Al's neutral colony of Side 6 during a botched mission to destroy a secret Federation prototype Gundam. Al, thrilled to have a real soldier as a friend, starts helping Bernie with his mission — not understanding what any of it actually costs. Meanwhile, Al's neighbor Chris is a kind, normal woman to him. He has no idea she's the test pilot of the very Gundam Bernie needs to destroy. This is a 6-episode OVA from Sunrise, set during the final days of the One Year War, and it's one of the most emotionally devastating things the Gundam franchise has ever produced. The mecha action is there, but this story is really about a boy losing his innocence. It's quiet, it's personal, and the ending will sit with you for a long time. If you liked the grounded, human-scale war stories in The 08th MS Team or the way Now and Then, Here and There filters conflict through a child's perspective, this hits similar notes. Haruhiko Mikimoto's character designs give it a warmth that makes the gut punches land even harder. You don't need to know anything about Gundam to watch this — just be ready to feel something.

Quick Takes

An unbelievably cruel and sad ending to what is undoubtedly the cleanest crystallization of the curiosities and themes of Gundam. The ability to make a pointless, stupid fight based on miscommunication and delayed response SO compelling and tragic is truly a feat.
Heartbreaking finale that ties the story up nicely, leaving you questioning alot of things about war
A Painful Episode to watch as it was filled with emotional scenes and the tragedy of war, which was very well portrayed.
