Synopsis

Imagine a wild alternate future where humanity's space colonies settle their disputes not through actual wars but with a giant fighting tournament using mechs. That's the world of G Gundam, and it's exactly as wild as it sounds. Domon Kasshu is Neo Japan's champion, piloting the Shining Gundam in the 13th Gundam Fight. But he's not really here for politics — he's hunting for his missing brother, who allegedly stole a dangerous prototype called the Devil Gundam. Traveling across Earth with his childhood friend and mechanic Rain Mikamura, Domon fights representatives from nations all over the world, each with their own distinct Gundam and martial arts style. The twist that makes this 49-episode TV series stand out from the rest of the Gundam franchise is the Mobile Trace System — pilots physically perform every move their Gundam makes, so fights feel more like kung fu bouts than typical robot-shooting-robot encounters. It's a Sunrise original from 1994 that leans harder into drama and romance than you'd expect from the premise. Domon is angry, driven, and emotionally closed off in ways that actually get explored rather than just used as a personality trait. If you liked the personal stakes of Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans or the tournament energy of something like Dragon Ball, G Gundam sits right at that intersection. Fans of Gundam Wing looking for something with a completely different flavor — this is it.
