Magical Project S
Oshimeter
Synopsis
When a well-meaning but scatter-brained magical princess from another kingdom picks an ordinary elementary schooler named Sasami Kawai — specifically her — to become the chosen magical girl tasked with saving the universe, she reacts pretty much the way you'd expect: she's not thrilled about it. That reluctance is the whole hook. She's not a wide-eyed dreamer chomping at the bit to transform and fight evil — she's a normal kid who'd rather just live her normal life, and that friction drives most of the comedy. Add in Ryo-Ohki, a rabbit-creature sidekick with her own agenda, and Ramia, a scheming rival who's actively trying to sabotage Sasami's mission by sending her own magical girl after her, and you've got a setup that knows exactly what it's doing with the genre. This is a parody built by people who clearly love magical girl shows, not one that's mocking them from a distance. It pokes fun at the tropes while still doing them earnestly. If you grew up with Cardcaptor Sakura or enjoy the lighter, comedic side of magical girl anime before things like Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha leaned into action, Pretty Sammy scratches a specific itch. It's also a spin-off set in the Tenchi Muyo universe with familiar faces reimagined in completely new roles, which adds a fun layer if you know that world. Twenty-six episodes, low stakes, genuinely funny writing.
