Macross Zero
Oshimeter
Synopsis
After losing a dogfight and getting shot down by an enemy jet that can transform mid-flight into a walking mech, fighter pilot Shin Kudo washes up on Mayan Island, a remote place with no modern technology, where a priestess named Sara Nome makes it very clear she doesn't want him there. Then both sides of the war show up looking for alien artifacts buried on her island, and suddenly nobody gets to pretend this is just a military conflict anymore. That's the setup for Macross Zero, a 5-episode OVA from 2002 that works as a prequel to the original Super Dimension Fortress Macross — set one year before the classic series begins. The clash between jet fighters and ancient ritual feels genuinely strange in the best way, and the tribal soundtrack layered under the mecha battles gives the whole thing an atmosphere you don't often find in military sci-fi. The CGI for the flight sequences holds up surprisingly well considering when it was made. If you've watched Super Dimension Fortress Macross and want to see where the Protoculture mythology actually starts, this fills that in thoughtfully. If you're coming from something like Martian Successor Nadesico and want a shorter, more grounded mecha story, the five-episode format keeps things focused. It's not loud or flashy about what it's doing — it just builds a conflict between people who see the world in completely incompatible ways, with transforming fighter jets caught in the middle.
