Synopsis

Once best friends, two men are now test pilots competing to build the military's next fighter jet, and they genuinely cannot stand each other anymore. That's the setup for Macross Plus, a 4-episode OVA from 1994 that somehow fits more emotional weight into its runtime than most full series manage. Isamu flies a nimble manual-control prototype. Guld operates one that responds directly to his brainwaves. Their rivalry is personal, not just professional, rooted in something that happened years ago involving a mutual friend named Myung, who shows up on the same planet producing concerts for Sharon Apple — an AI pop idol who's technically not finished yet, her emotional responses supplied by a real human. The love triangle simmers underneath all the aerial combat, and neither thread lets the other breathe easy. If you liked Cowboy Bebop's mix of cool aesthetics and quietly broken characters, this lives in a similar emotional space. If you've watched Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory and wanted the personal drama to cut a little deeper, Macross Plus delivers that. Yoko Kanno composed the soundtrack, and it shifts between orchestral, electronic, and something harder to name — it fits the tone perfectly. The animation blended traditional cel work with early CGI for the dogfights, and it still holds up. Four episodes. Romantic, a little melancholy, and more interested in what people carry around unsaid than in the jets themselves.
