Synopsis

When the girl they both loved back in the day unexpectedly shows up, bitter rivals and former best friends competing to build the military's next-generation fighter jet on a distant colony planet find their complicated history colliding all over again. That's the core of Macross Plus, and it's a lot more emotionally tangled than a typical mecha story. Isamu is reckless and impulsive, Guld is controlled and cold, and Myung is caught somewhere between their past and a strange new job managing Sharon Apple, an AI pop idol who's basically the biggest celebrity in the galaxy. The personal history between these three gives the action real weight — every test flight rivalry feels like it's about more than just aircraft specs. The Yoko Kanno soundtrack is genuinely worth mentioning because it shifts between orchestral, electronic, and vocal tracks in ways that actually serve the story rather than just filling silence. Visually, it was ahead of its time, mixing traditional cel animation with early CGI in ways that still hold up. If you appreciated the character-driven heaviness of Neon Genesis Evangelion or the stylish atmosphere of Cowboy Bebop, this sits comfortably in that same space — emotionally grounded sci-fi where the machines are secondary to the people inside them. At a single movie runtime, it's a lean, complete story that doesn't overstay its welcome.
